Basic role of the prostate
The prostate contributes fluid to semen and sits below the bladder around part of the urethra. Because of that location, prostate enlargement or inflammation can affect urination.
Why age matters
Prostate problems become more common with age. NIDDK notes that BPH is the most common prostate problem in men older than 50.
Symptoms deserve evaluation
Urinary frequency, urgency, dribbling and weak stream can occur with prostate problems, but symptoms are not specific enough to self-diagnose the cause.
